Use an IRS online account to prepare a tax-debt review

An official online account can help you gather information before discussing a tax balance. Treat what you find as part of a record review and preserve the date of the information. A screen alone does not answer every question about a return or notice.

Enter through the official source

Start from the IRS website and follow its current account instructions. Review the service description before completing identity verification. Keep your sign-in and verification codes private; a referral conversation should not require surrendering them. If you cannot access the online service, look for the official alternatives relevant to the information you need. Do not assume that an unfamiliar search advertisement or email provides the same route as the IRS page.

Compare account information with your documents

Review the periods and available payment or balance information, then compare them with your latest notice and confirmations. Record the date of your review. If something differs, note the exact year, amount and transaction before asking for help. A recently submitted payment or return may need further explanation; avoid making a second transaction simply because you do not immediately recognize the account display. Preserve the original evidence for reconciliation.

Prepare a small review summary

Write down what is confirmed, what appears inconsistent and what is still missing. Ask a qualified provider whether a particular transcript or additional record would clarify the issue. Keep personal identity details out of a public or referral-site message. Share sensitive records only after confirming the recipient and secure process. The account is an information source; visiting it does not automatically establish a payment agreement, submit a notice response or authorize a representative.

Your action checklist

Use the checks to plan. Do not send sensitive documents through this website.

Questions people ask

Does an online account replace my filed return?

No. Keep the return and supporting records. Account information and available transcripts answer different questions and may not contain every detail you need.

Can a referral site log in for me?

This site does not access your tax account. Ask any retained professional to explain the proper authorization process instead of sharing your sign-in credentials.
